Make It Mondays - Succulent Terrariums

If you've been reading this blog for a while, you may know that succulents are going to be used in the centerpieces and general decor of our pending nuptials (mentioned here, here, and here).  Now if you can believe it - this isn't a wedding post. After spending the past weekend upstate at my parents transplanting baby succulents into bigger containers that will eventually be for the wedding, we ended up with a few extras that I decided to take back to Brooklyn with me.

They are so leeeeetle!!
I have always loved succulents - they are generally hearty little plants that require little direct sunlight, are watered fairly infrequently, and have a shallow root system, making them ADORBS in little planters.  There are a tons of tutorials out there for making terrariums in all sorts of containers, and succulents look great as living wreaths. They seem to be pretty trendy currently in the blogosphere, with many bloggers putting their own spin on a timeless gardening craft. There is not one, but two schools here in Brooklyn that offer gardening classes that I know of off the top of my head, proving that succulents are the IT plant (don't I sound like a fashion journalist right now?)

So here is my little version...

Potting soil, sand, succulents, rocks and a large glass vase from Ikea
Mix up your soil and sand 50/50
Plant your plants!
I tried it with just rocks...

...then a little sailboat...

...but decided to keep Predator. UPDATE: Tom just informed me that is Alien.  Oops.

Here is our backyard.  My little slice of country in the city, if you will.  Even my slice of country is covered in bricks. Figures. After several summers of trying my hand at different vegetables and flowers, I've  resigned to the fact that there just isn't enough sun in here to grow anything worth while.

Tall trees and tall buildings do not make for great sunlight
So this year I'm trying morning glories.  After a night of soaking the seeds in water, and then one night in the dirt, they have already poked through the soil! Here's hoping the cats don't scratch these out of the ground before they really have a chance to grow.

Our poor rose bush that literally grew about 4 feet in a matter of 2 weeks at the end of April once the leaves on the trees started to fill in. Gotta reach for that sun around here!

This is where you can usually find Allen.

And my girl Ella is never far from me or any of my projects.

And here is a cute slug that Poe brought in...I mean seriously, he is sooo tiny and cute! Look at those ears! (ears?) We brought him out to the rose bush after his photo shoot.

Did you get any planting done this weekend, in the back yard or in a household planter?  Pull any cute, but not so welcome critters off of your pets?  Keep your fingers crossed that my morning glories make it this year!

March Madness has nothing to do with basketball...or Busy Season Sucks

...or Why this may be my last post until mid April.

So, I'm a tax accountant.  And I'm busy. And I'm pretty much not doing anything but taxes right now...and for the rest of March...into April. So without further ado, all you're getting is a few funny cat pictures to tide you over, and one of me in this past year's Halloween costume.

I wish...if you knew how much I spend on my three cats a month with their special cat food you would be disgusted.

I think we can all agree this is the complete truth.
I wish I was staying late for a red dot.  Sounds like much more fun than TAXES

And if you're curious if ANYBODY got my costume at the Halloween party I was at - one person.  And he didn't even find it that funny. You can't really tell in this picture, but I actually have poster board with construction paper strapped to my back to match the Business Cat meme.  Yeah I am that cool.

Pictures from here and here.

Halloween 2011 or Business Cat Revisited

If you've been reading this blog for a while, you know I have a true appreciation for nerdy internet creativity.  Be it a well executed presentation, eloquent music video or two, or a great website for nerdy jokes like xkcd.com or icanhascheezburger.com.

I decided to take my favorite internet meme fondly referred to as "Business Cat" to the next level this Halloween:

Cat headband + suit and tie + cardboard and construction paper and ribbon for straps = NERDIEST HALLOWEEN COSTUME TO DATE. I blame/thank Tom for bringing out this side of me.  He claims I'm nerdier than him now. He might be right.

Gratuitous comparison:

Anyone else go full nerd for Halloween this year?

Business Cat

Clearly I love all things Cat.  Icanhascheezburger.com is one of my favorite websites to browse.  That really sarcastic humor is right up my alley.  And I always love a good internet meme.  My loving boyfriend just sent me this link and I actually had to read it in doses because I was laughing so hard at my desk I couldn't stand it.

If this type of humor isn't your thing, well, I feel sorry for you.  Because it is HI-LAR-I-OUS to me. Plus that cat looks just like my Poe!

Check it out, you won't be disappointed!

REVEAL: Extra Room Re-Do

And now the unveiling of my overhaul of our extra room.  If you want to see how far I came with it, look here.

I don't know why, but I was dying to turn our L-shaped glass desk out into the middle of the room.  So the desk now greets you as you enter the room. TW wasn't exactly thrilled about it but I told him it's my room now since he neglected it for the past two years.

I have to apologize for the quality of the pictures. This room gets no natural light and I'm still learning how to take better pictures with my camera.

Helper Cat Poe

The dresser ended up opposite the desk, along the wall with the closet.

I need to get a new frame for the my Registered Star document....then I need to find a new spot for it. I did finally find a spot for our three picture frame from our last cruise though!

And last but not least, the bookcases that I put together all by myself!  I know to most it still looks like a hot cluttered mess, but this was such progress for us.  I'm planning on keeping my eyes our for some more crates for the bottom shelves to hide stuff, but I am having more trouble than I anticipated in finding the right size. If anyone has any suggestions for 12 x 12 x 11 crates - let me know!

Hi Allen!

Just had to share...

BoingBoing.net started doing a picture or article every Saturday called "Caturday". You can guess what the topic revolves around....

This past week's headline was Caturday: Just Say No to LOL

Welcome!

Ahh, my first blog (well at least for myself, you can see my guest blogs here and here for my friend Jen). Where to start?  Kilo Bravo is an old nickname from college (think international radio spelling alphabet) and I always really liked the ring to it. I’m in my late twenties, living in Brooklyn, working in Manhattan, and I grew up in the beautiful Catskill Mountains. I’m a tax accountant by day which leaves my creative side feeling ignored (although, I am pretty handy with excel).

Expect to see interior design ideas (and hopefully some of my own work!).  Expect to see recipes as I try to learn how to cook for my patient boyfriend.  Expect to see some nerdy jokes and science stuff that interests me (my boyfriend has helped me really embrace my inner nerd).  Expect to see hostess-ing ideas and pictures from parties I throw (first idea to steal from this site is WINE NIGHT). Expect to see a lot of parentheses. And definitely expect to see pictures of cats.

Here are a few for your viewing pleasure:  My kitties Ella, Allen, and Poe. Ella and Poe are from the same litter, and we inherited Allen a few months later. I’m not a creepy cat lady, because thankfully, my boyfriend loves me.  If he ever leaves me, I’m screwed.
